Light sells: Why illumination is the most underrated tool behind your counter

After years working with retail displays, I’ve learned that the cheapest, fastest way to lift sales from a fixture isn’t a new planogram or a price change. It’s light. Shoppers are wired to look at whatever is brightest, and nowhere is that more true than behind the counter, where products sit a few feet away, often in shadow, and the customer has only seconds to decide. Get the lighting right and that wall starts selling for you. Here’s the research that backs it up.

In a controlled 2022 study with a Midwestern convenience retailer, simply adding display lighting drove unit sales up 37% and dollar sales up 43% on the illuminated sections, with other factors controlled for and overall store traffic up less than 4%.

That’s not a remodel or a new product line – that’s the same merchandise, lit. As Neil Saunders, Managing Director of GlobalData Retail, sums it up: “Display lighting is crucial in capturing shoppers’ attention, highlighting merchandise, and creating a sense of desire that leads to increased sales.” When I show owners that figure, the conversation changes fast.

Why it works: attention, dwell time, and perception – Lighting works because of how people are built. Roughly 80% of the sensory information the brain receives comes through the eyes, as Mihaly Bartha, Head of Lighting at GPstudio, notes — “what you light is literally what registers”. “Lighting impacts on every aspect of the retail experience, from brand and product perception to consumer engagement and mood,” he adds. Bright product pulls the eye, and the eye pulls the basket. It’s a point retail strategist. As Ron Lutz, EVP & CCO of Miller Zell notes: “Lighting should be a top priority in store design… because lighting can single-handedly influence the mood of the shopping environment.”

It also buys you time at the store. Research cited in the same report shows that for every 1% increase in dwell time, spending rises about 1.3%, and lit displays measurably extend how long shoppers linger.

When Dutch supermarkets lit half the stores in LED, half in old fluorescents and tracked results for 21 weeks — the LED side sold 2% more product per customer. After Globus (a German grocery chain) pastel-toned spotlights in a promo area – this act alone lifted sales there 6% and increased customer visits to that area 15% [2].

What this means for your backbar?

The takeaway for any store owner is simple: the wall behind your register is prime real estate, and dim shelving wastes it. Per-shelf illumination spotlights your high-margin items (pouches, premium packs, new launches), helps customers find what they want during a rush, and makes the whole counter look like a destination instead of a storage rack. It’s also why modern illuminated backbar systems — like Palram 4U’s individually lit FlexRack and BackBar fixtures are catching on: they bake this “light sells” advantage right into the fixture, no electrician required.

If you’re going to improve one thing behind the counter this year, make it brighter.
